Glaciar — English overview
This English-language section mirrored the main Glaciar pages for international viewers following Lupa Corporation’s live Perito Moreno Glacier broadcasts in Santa Cruz, Patagonia.
Archives from 2008–2009 described the rupture spectacle in detail. The glacier is one of few Patagonian ice fields that periodically advances across Lago Argentino, damming the lake’s southern arm (Brazo Rico) until water pressure breaks the ice barrier. When the dam holds, the trapped side can rise substantially above the main lake level before the collapse — an irregular cycle occurring anywhere from roughly yearly to less than once a decade.
Press and site copy around July 2008 noted partial break-ups leading to a full rupture after days of buildup, with on-line video highlights for viewers who missed the live window. Earlier major events referenced in the archives include ruptures in March 2004 and March 2006.
Lupa described its work as digital tourism: bringing Patagonian natural events to a global internet audience. Companion features on the historical site included guestbooks, postcards, wallpapers, and photo galleries — ways to keep engagement when weather paused the live uplink.
The glacier honours Argentine explorer Francisco Pascasio Moreno (named 1899; first recorded sighting 1879), whose Patagonian surveys helped define the southern Chile–Argentina border.
