2007 whale vigil
The 2007 edition of Lupa Corporation’s Ballenas project continued live web coverage of southern right whales (Eubalaena australis) along the Patagonian coast — framed provincially as welcoming the whales back to Chubut’s waters.
Historical copy from the period described Chubut’s appeal beyond the broadcasts alone: Andean mountains and forests, interior plateaus, beaches and cliff coasts, Welsh colonisation heritage, and palaeontological and archaeological sites — context for why digital vigils were meant to inspire real tourism.
Each season, the company positioned cameras at key points on Península Valdés so internet viewers could follow the whales’ arrival in near real time. This page preserves the historical URL structure of the original /ballenas/2007/ section.
The broadcasts were part of a broader effort to use the web as a window into Argentine wildlife for a global audience — the same strategy later applied to penguin colonies and the Perito Moreno glacier.
